Editorial Policy

How we research, build, review, and correct what you read and use here.

What we publish

CoverageMath publishes formula-based decision calculators and the plain-English explanations around them, covering U.S. health-insurance topics: Marketplace (ACA) subsidies, COBRA, the self-employed health insurance deduction, and Medicare income-related surcharges. We do not publish sponsored "best plan" rankings, and we do not sell or broker insurance.

Sourcing standard

Every rule, threshold, and dollar figure traces to a primary government source — the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Health and Human Services / ASPE, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, or the Social Security Administration. Where a respected secondary source (such as the Kaiser Family Foundation) is used to cross-check, it is identified as a cross-check, not the source of record. Sources are listed on each calculator page and in our methodology.

Accuracy & review

Calculator engines are covered by an automated test suite with fixtures derived from the governing rules and worked examples. Flagship outputs are cross-checked against an independent calculator for identical inputs. Because this is "your money or your life" (YMYL) content, we hold accuracy above breadth: we would rather ship fewer calculators that are correct than more that are sloppy.

Updates & versioning

Year-dependent figures live in versioned data files, each with a last_verified date shown on the relevant page. When a governing body releases new figures, we add the new year and re-verify. Material methodology changes are reflected here and in the methodology page.

Corrections

We treat any disagreement with a primary source as a defect to be fixed promptly. To report one, see the About page. When we correct a substantive error, we update the affected page and its verification date.

Independence & monetization

CoverageMath is reader-first. At launch the site carries no advertising. If display advertising is later added, it will be clearly labeled and will never influence a calculator's math or the content's conclusions. We do not take payment to change a result.
